About Us

Midland Ecology

Who We Are

Based in Birmingham, the team at Midland Ecology is made up of licenced ecologists, qualified surveyors, experienced consultants and skilled support staff. Multiple factors make us effective in serving clients, including disciplines in relevant areas, an ethos for sharing knowledge with each other, and a drive to provide the best possible service to clients.

Due to specialising in covering the Midlands and surrounding areas, our ecological consultancy offers a service that integrates local factors such as the specific stipulations of the local planning authority, ecological aspects that are unique to the region, and any other planning requirements that would otherwise hinder planning applications.

Through investing in our team, we’ve been able to generate progression and longevity, and we encourage personal and professional growth by catering to the acquisition of further qualifications and certifications, namely from the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and Natural England.

What We Do

All development projects are conducted with an end goal in mind, and we make it our job to help you to meet your obligations to the local authorities, the natural environment, land management and habitat management while completing your plans successfully.

A wide range of ecological surveys are available, including an inspection designed to achieve biodiversity net gain (BNG), general ecological assessments such as an ecological impact assessment (EcIA) or preliminary ecological appraisal (PEA), and any number of protected species surveys.

In terms of phase 1 habitat surveys, offerings include bat surveys, barn owl surveys and bird surveys for animals or Himalayan balsam surveys, injurious weed surveys or Japanese knotweed surveys for plants, and many more.

Our team manage ecological surveys throughout all stages of the planning process, starting with ecological advice from head office and preliminary site surveys at an early stage, right the way through to protected species surveys on present animals and plants, and expert advice on ecological mitigation work within your ecology report based on the best solution for your development site.

Central Location

The Midlands

Situated at the heart of the West Midlands region, our team is based at Quayside Tower, 252-260 Broad St, Birmingham, B1 2HF. By choosing a location right within the centre, we are given fluidity and flexibility with catering to the needs of all potential clients requesting quotes from all around the Midlands.

Unlike ecological consultancies that provide a service on a nationwide level, our team are able to spend more time working and less time travelling by targeting the Midlands area in isolation, maximising our output, minimising the number of wasted opportunities, ensuring a detailed understanding of locational factors such as the local authority, and enabling us to keep offering competitive prices for our ecological services.

Our Team

With a combination of many years in ecology and environmental management and the collection of extensive experience across the board from working with countless clients on a seemingly endless number of planning projects, our ecological consultancy offers all of the assurances that you would expect from the provider of any service. We’ve worked on behalf of private homeowners simply staging a renovation to their property and professional developers managing large commercial planning projects and everything in between.

Full ownership over your ecological assessment means that your case won’t be passed on to a subcontractor or a professional from outside of Midland Ecology. Instead, if bats, breeding birds, great crested newts or a rare or invasive species of plant, for example, is found on your development site, our team will be equipped to undertake the necessary protected species surveys and move you closer to sealing a planning application, whether it involves a bat survey, breeding bird survey, great crested newt survey or invasive species survey.

Our Ecological Standards

Part of what guarantees that our range of ecological surveys are conducted at the highest possible standard is our commitment to following existing guidance from relevant organisations and regulators, as well as remaining at the forefront of any updates and changes in the world of both planning and ecology. The starting point begins with showing compliance to such legislation as the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2019.

From there, we ensure that we are in tune with the parameters of such organisations as Natural England, the Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), and the Chartered Institute for Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM). Our tenure supplying developers in the Midlands with ecology surveys has given us a comprehensive understanding of the licensing needed to correctly deal with habitat creation, relocation and destruction, ecological aspects such as protected species, and even other variable factors such as historic buildings and other sensitive elements within planning.
